Tanzania says it has reached an agreement with neighbouring Burundi to begin sending back all Burundian refugees from October, adding that the repatriation will take place in collaboration with the United Nations. However, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) said in a statement on Tuesday that the conditions in Burundi, which was plunged into a political crisis four years ago, are not "conducive to promote returns" and noted that it is assisting refugees who indicate they have made a voluntary choice to return home. 2019-08-27 07:58:18 South Africas Standard Bank has taken a stake in local fintech firm Nomanini to offer credit to potentially millions of small shop owners and other informal retailers across Africa that have limited access to banking services. Africas biggest bank by assets has invested $4m in Nomanini, which connects informal merchants with distributors via an e-wallet, and aims to roll the service out across 14 African countries by early 2021. Nine out of 10 retail transactions in Africa are conducted in cash or via informal channels like kiosks and open-air markets, according to a 2017 report by audit firm Deloitte. Using Nomanini technology, Standard Bank will collect and analyse data on the retailers. South Africa has impounded a plane belonging to Tanzania’s national carrier over a farmer’s $33-million compensation claim for land which was nationalised decades ago, a lawyer said Sunday. The Air Tanzania aircraft was seized on Friday at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport after it landed on a scheduled flight from the Tanzanian economic capital Dar es Salaam. Lawyer Roger Wakefield of Werksmans Attorneys said the seizure followed an order granted by the High Court in Johannesburg on Wednesday. In the 1980s, Tanzania’s government nationalised a massive privately-owned bean and seed farm, seizing everything including equipment, 250 cars and 12 small planes. The Namibian-born Tanzanian farm owner, who the lawyer refused to name, was awarded $36 million in compensation in the 1990s — but the government only paid $20 million. The outstanding balance of $16 million has accrued interest over the decades and now stands at $33 million, according to the lawyer who specialises...

A stalwart of the All Progressives Congress, APC, was shot dead by a stray bullet from a Mobile policeman in Ladipo area of Oshodi, Lagos. There were, however, different accounts as to how the deceased, Daudu Waliu, was sent to an unprepared grave. A  version of the account said that the father of four, who was into rentals,  had gone to pack some chairs he rented to the Celestial Church of Christ, Oshodi Parish, on Olatunji Street at about 8 pm. By the suit, the plaintiff, Mr. Donald Okonkwo, wants the court to declare Kanu a fugitive in the United Kingdom. Also, the plaintiff is asking for an order for the arrest and repatriation of Kanu from wherever he is hiding in Great Britain back to Nigeria to stand his trial within 21 days. President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Africa’s leading industrialist and businessman, following recent losses of some members of his family. Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said Buhari commiserated with Dangote for the for losing  cousin, Madugu Dantata, his uncle, Alhaji Murtala Dantata and Alhaji Sa’idu Fanta, a relation. One Mr Fidelis has been arrested for luring his neighbor’s househelp and selling her off to his sister in Lagos. According to report, Theresa went missing five months ago and efforts to locate her proved futile. Ironically, the suspect played a major role in the search. An early hours and heavy downpour which lasted for many hours have on Sunday destroyed at least 100 houses in President Muhammadu Buhari’s hometown, Daura in Katsina state. It was gathered that no life was lost in the heavy downpour which led to the collapse of many houses and their walls. Some areas affected include Kalgo, Rahmawa, Bayan Motel, Lungun Kofar Baru and Sarkin Yara A ward (Unguwan Kaura), Buhari’s polling unit ward among others. A source in the area said in Kalgo about 50 houses were destroyed by the heavy downpour while others recorded similar losses. “It was a heavy downpour. It started as early as 7 am on Sunday morning.
