Nigeria "Super Camp" strategy questioned

Image
Nigeria’s new strategy of withdrawing to “super camps” that can be more easily defended against insurgents, is under scrutiny following unchallenged attacks on unprotected towns in the countryside. When Islamic State gunmen stormed the northeast Nigerian town of Magumeri on the night of August 21, they had free rein. Unchallenged, they torched a clinic in Magumeri, ransacked government buildings and looted shops before returning to another town they had raided that night called Gubio, residents said. It’s a mess, militarily, and a disaster for humanitarian actors. Nigeria’s new ‘super camp’ strategy The new military strategy announced by President Muhammadu Buhari in July to concentrate soldiers in big bases is designed to give troops a secure platform from which they can respond quickly to threats in the region and raid militant camps. People familiar with the military’s thinking and security officials, however, say the new tactic for fighting Islamic State’s West Africa bra...

Facebook to expand use of facial recognition

Image
On Tuesday, Facebook said that it’s dumping “tag suggestions” – the technology it’s used since 2015 to automatically recognize people’s faces and suggest to their friends that they tag them. For most users this used to be all that Facebook’s facial recognition technology was used for. But it’s replaced one-trick-pony tag suggestions with the multi-purpose “face recognition” setting. It’s available to all users, along with an option to opt out. Facebook introduced facial recognition in December 2017. The feature spots users when their likeness crops up in photos, even when they haven’t been tagged. It also spots if someone uses your picture as their profile photo. At the time it rolled out the feature, Facebook described it as a way to manage your appearance in tag suggestions, and to keep us safe from things like identity thieves. Here’s Facebook AI researcher Srinivas Narayanan: Starting today, people ...

Reasons you should marry your best friend

Image
It’s always a little weird and a little awesome when best friends get together. I remember watching The Flash and thinking, “Iris and Barry cannot get together! It’d be too weird! They know each other too well already. How could a romantic relationship with your best friend even work?!” But studies show that marriages have double the satisfaction if the spouses say their spouse is their best friend, and for many good reasons. The biggest one being that couples who say they married their best friend have a less than 30% rate of divorce. Maybe you’re thinking about taking the plunge and asking out your current best friend or are working on becoming best friends with your current partner. Either way, know that the rewards of marrying your best friend are high. Here are just a few reasons to marry your BFF: 1. They know you. And I mean, really really know you. They know you get cranky in the mornings or when you don’t get to the gym often enoug...

Ways that alcohol can mess up your relationship

Image
Why are do you drink alcohol? Some say they drink to fit in, others to forget their troubles, others to help them socialize because when sober they lack confidence, others because it is a habit they are too used to. A lot of adults were introduced into drinking by their drinking parents or relatives, by a group of friends they hanged out with in high school or college, by a romantic lover they had, by a colleague at work who convinced them that with money they need to do over 18 things. A lot of adults have alcohol problems. When you have alcohol problems, you will have relationship problems. The unfortunate thing about most adults who drink is that they dont admit they have a problem. Here are some ways that alcohol can mess up your relationship/marriage; 1. A Kenyan church bans politics during church services

Image
Police in Kenya have declared a sitting lawmaker “wanted” for his role in a fracas at a church service over the weekend. Local media reported that security heads in the central Muranga county were looking to arrest Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro. An official of the county’s criminal investigations outfit urged the MP to surrender in his own interest. Julius Rutere is quoted to have said: “Anyone who sees him should tell him to surrender because he can run but he cannot hide.” Police also added that a number of official complainants had been filed against the MP over the incident. According to the official, Nyoro committed a range of criminal offences on Sunday when he briefly disrupted worship at the Gitui Catholic church located in his constituency. Authorities said some of the charges they have line up for the MP include creating a public nuisance, assaulting police officers and resisting lawful arrest. In a case of local-level political squabble, the wa...

List of world's most censored countries

Image
Eritrea is the world's most censored country, according to a new report by a media watchdog which also cites extreme measures taken by authorities in nine other countries, including North Korea, China and Saudi Arabia. The US-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said on Tuesday that the worst three countries for press censorship - Eritrea, North Korea and Turkmenistan - use the media "as a mouthpiece of the state, and independent journalism is conducted from exile". Other countries on the top 10 list "use a combination of blunt tactics like harassment and arbitrary detention as well as sophisticated surveillance and targeted hacking to silence the independent press," the report said. Saudi Arabia, China, Vietnam and Iran - ranked fourth to seventh, respectively - were cited in the CPJ report for "jailing and harassing journalists and their families, while als...

Google is fined for collecting data on kids

Image
Google will pay $170m to settle allegations that its YouTube video service broke United States federal law by collecting personal information about children, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said on Wednesday. YouTube had been accused of tracking viewers of childrens channels- by using cookies obtained without parental consent - to deliver millions of dollars in targeted advertisements to those viewers. The settlement with the FTC and the New York State attorney generals office, which will receive $34m, is the largest since a law banning collecting information about children under age 13 came into effect in 1998. The law was revised in 2013 to include "cookies", which are used to track internet viewing habits. Democrats and childrens advocacy groups complained that the settlement terms arent strong enough. Googles parent, Alphabet Inc, generates most of its revenues from sales of ad space and ad technology, and in July reported total second-quarter revenue of $38.9b...

Kenya-Somalia maritime dispute case postponed

Image
The International Court of Justice has held off the hearing of the maritime dispute case between Kenya and Somalia for two months. This follows a request by Kenya to the court asking for more time citing the need to recruit a new defence team. The hearings that were scheduled for next week will now be held between November 4 and 8 though Kenya had sought a 12-month postponement. "The court expressed its deep regret regarding this last-minute request which has caused an undue effect on the administration of the judicial work of the court. In light of the circumstance and the possible alternative dates in its judicial calendar, the court decided to grant a postponement of the oral proceedings in the case and reschedule the hearing to the week beginning Monday, November 4, 2019," the court wrote to Attorney General Paul Kihara. The letter dated September 5 also said that ICJ said that the decision was reached after considering Kenyans application which was made on Septem...

South Africa: Scores arrested in looting, xenophobic protests

Image
South African police on Monday arrested dozens of people following widespread looting and protests in the transport industry linked to a wave of anti-foreigner sentiment. At least 70 people have been arrested since hundreds of people marched through Johannesburg’s Central Business District (CBD) earlier on Monday, plundering shops and torching cars and buildings, the police said in a statement. The unrest started on Sunday when an old building in the CBD caught fire and collapsed, killing at least three people. It then spread to two eastern suburbs and to the capital Pretoria, where local media reported shops burning in the Marabastad - a central business area largely populated by economic migrants. Police also said they were investigating a death in Hillbrow, where a “member of the public” was allegedly shot by a group. “At this stage police are still interviewing several people to establish the motive,” said a statement by the provincial commissi...

Young Palestinian lady killed for going on a date

Image
The death of a young Palestinian woman in a so-called honor killing in the West Bank has sparked protests and calls for justice. Critics say the authorities must do more to ensure women are protected. The outrage can be felt on the streets and online. In the wake of the death of Israa Ghrayeb, dozens of Palestinian women demonstrated in Ramallah on Monday. Ghrayeb, 21, died on August 22 after being severely injured at home two weeks earlier. Activists say she was severely beaten by family members in a so-called honor killing. Protesters have sharply called into question the circumstances which they say caused her death: a misconception of honor, aggressive patriarchal culture and adherence to barbaric traditions. The attack was reportedly sparked by a picture with a man who had recently proposed to her that she posted to photo-sharing platform Instagram. The photo evidently incensed her family so much that they instructed her brother to physically punish her. When she tried to...

Ebola deaths in eastern Congo top 2,000 fatalities

Image
The death toll from the year-long Ebola outbreak in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has topped 2,000, according to government data released on Friday, which also showed the number of confirmed cases had surpassed 3,000. The outbreak, which was officially declared in August of last year, is the second deadliest on record behind the 2013-2016 epidemic in West Africa that killed more than 11,300 people. Uganda, meanwhile, reported another case of Ebola - a nine-year-old girl who crossed the border from neighbouring DRC. The child - who is now in isolation at a hospital in the Ugandan border district of Kasese - travelled from the DRC with her mother on Wednesday, Ugandas health ministry said in a statement on Thursday.
